Is This Program for Me?

Are you creative and detail-oriented? Do you enjoy solving puzzles and applying logical reasoning to real-world problems? Then, our Mathematics Major is for you!

Many people believe that doing mathematics is synonymous with performing calculations, but it is much more than that. Mathematics is the study of quantity, space, structure and change; built on logic and abstraction.

If you're intrigued by this major, you'll discover it offers a versatile foundation that complements a wide array of interests. Mathematical skills and training are highly valued by employers across many fields, making it an asset regardless of your career aspirations.

What Will I Learn?

Our goal is to provide you with a supportive yet challenging academic experience, where you are encouraged to develop into well-rounded mathematical thinkers. We do this through a rigorous program of study as part of a strong liberal arts education. We help guide you not only through our program but through decisions about where to go from here, whether it be graduate school or a wide variety of career opportunities.

Through coursework, internships and faculty-led research, you will graduate with the ability to think critically and logically, and to successfully navigate mathematical problem-solving, a process that includes formulating a problem, solving it correctly and then properly interpreting the results to draw valid conclusions. You will also be equipped to communicate the process and results orally and in writing.

What Makes Us Different?

Intentional Connection

The department values community among faculty and students, and the small class sizes Samford prides itself on ensures individual attention.

Renowned Excellence

Our faculty are research active: they publish new results in mathematics journals, present their findings at conferences and secure external grant funding to support their work. They also involve students in all aspects of the research process, from formulating a research question to reporting results.

Robust Opportunities

Undergraduate research with one of our faculty members occurs every semester, leading to student-coauthored publications and presentations at regional and national conferences.

Foundational Faith

Our instruction is exclusively provided within a Christian environment, where our faculty members actively engage with the wider community. Many of them serve as pastors, Sunday school teachers and volunteers, while also leading various Christ-centered student groups and initiatives.

Prepared to Succeed

With Samford ranked #10 in the nation for career preparation by the Wall Street Journal, we are dedicated to ensuring you graduate prepared for a wide variety of careers and further academic work. Our alumni have a track record of attending top graduate programs, with recent placements at institutions such as Baylor, Iowa State, Duke and NC State. Moreover, our graduates move on to careers in finance and technology, securing positions at esteemed organizations such as Amwins Insurance, ProAssurance Corporation, Regions Bank, FCCI Insurance Group and Raytheon.

Students interested in furthering their education are well prepared to succeed in graduate school where they can earn an MS or PhD in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, data science, data analytics or similar fields. Additionally, students considering law school would benefit from knowing that mathematics majors tend to perform well on the LSAT, underscoring the versatility and rigor of our program.
