If you are excited by problem solving, creative thinking, and discovery, consider a major in mathematics and computer science, or a minor in mathematics, computer science, or bioinformatics.

Mathematics

Studying mathematics develops such skills as thinking logically, abstractly and rigorously, formulating and solving problems, analyzing data and creating and analyzing models. Employers value these skills; hence, math majors find themselves in demand by employers for careers in a wide spectrum of fields.

A bachelor’s degree in mathematics will prepare you for jobs in mathematics education at the secondary level, mathematical research, applied mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, mathematical modeling, operations research and management, cryptography and cryptanalysis, mathematical biology, and economics and finance. As well, a strong background in mathematics is necessary for success in computer science, bioinformatics, physics, and engineering.

Torry
Samford did an amazing job of preparing me for graduate studies. My first year of grad school was a breeze. Many of my fellow students were seeing material for the first time; for me, it was review. —Torry Patton, Math Educator

Computer Science

Computer science is at the forefront of a technological revolution that has dramatically changed the face of modern society. Modes of thinking, acting, and interacting have been and will continue to be shaped by the computer. Significant advances in many other disciplines seldom occur today without some crucial reliance on computing capabilities.

The Computer Science program at Samford prepares students for graduate study or to become productive members of the working world. The aim is to provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of computer science that will equip students to pursue a variety of career options. The Computer Science program at Samford offers quality instruction with an excellent student to faculty ratio and actively supports research opportunities for undergraduates.

Our faculty reflect a broad range of backgrounds and interests, we offer classes with excellent student-to-faculty ratios, and our students have excellent opportunities for undergraduate research. Please refer to the individual Mathematics or Computer Science sections for degree and program information, news, and more.
