As set forth in the Samford University Nondiscrimination Statement, Cumberland School of Law (Cumberland) complies with applicable federal and state nondiscrimination laws in its admission policies, legal education policies, programs and activities, employment policies and practices, and other activities. As a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and as a member institution of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), Cumberland also meets the following nondiscrimination requirements of those organizations.
In accord with Standard 205(a) of the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the ABA, Cumberland does not use admission policies or take other action to preclude admission of applicants or retention of students on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability. Pursuant to ABA Standard 205(b), Cumberland likewise fosters and maintains equality of opportunity for students, faculty, and staff, without discrimination or segregation on the basis of sexual orientation.
Consistent with AALS Bylaw 6-3, Cumberland pursues a policy of providing equality of opportunity in legal education for all persons, including (i) faculty and staff employees, with respect to hiring, continuation, promotion and tenure, and (ii) applicants for admission, enrolled students, and graduates, without discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, color, national origin, sex, gender (including identity and expression), sexual orientation, age or disability.
As an institution of higher education with longstanding affiliation with Alabama Baptists that is grounded in its religious purposes, and consistent with applicable civil rights laws and accreditation standards, Cumberland seeks and prefers employee applicants of Christian faith who are committed to Samford’s Mission, Vision and Core Values. Cumberland reserves all other rights as a religiously-controlled institution of higher education under applicable law.
