Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law provides a collegial legal education that offers scholarly interaction between its faculty and students, camaraderie among the student body and excellent career preparation for those entering the legal workforce. Blake Harper, a December 2020 graduate, praises Cumberland School of Law for these things as he prepares for his legal career.

Prior to coming to law school, Harper worked as a certified public accountant (CPA) for seven years. In order to diversify his professional background, Harper chose to pursue a legal education. He excelled, ranking in the top 2% of his class, receiving recognition on the Dean’s List and qualifying as a Scholar of Merit. He was a member of the National Moot Court Team, an Abraham Caruthers Fellow, an associate justice on the Moot Court Executive Board and a junior editor for the Cumberland Law Review.

“My experience at Cumberland has been overwhelmingly positive,” Harper said. “To anyone who is considering law school, I can't recommend Cumberland strongly enough. The camaraderie within our student body makes the challenging task of learning the law much more enjoyable.”

Upon receiving his Juris Doctor (J.D.) in December, Harper will join the attorneys of Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz. There he plans to primarily focus on business transactions, combining his experience as a CPA and his newly completed legal education.

“Thanks to our great professors, I feel very confident that I am ready to take the bar exam and hit the ground running at Baker Donelson next year,” he said.

Harper joins 10 other J.D. candidates who will be recognized during Samford’s December 2020 virtual commencement ceremony, including one who will receive the joint J.D./Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree with a concentration in health law and policy. Additionally, four candidates will receive the Master of Comparative Law (M.C.L.).
