During emergency situations, Samford University uses RAVE to distribute information to students and employees. The university also may use email, text messages, Facebook, Twitter and digital signage, and will post any delays, schedule changes or building closure notices at samford.edu and the emergency weather line.
Extreme Heat
In the event of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, call 911 or the University Police at 205-726-2020, and notify a supervisor.
Flood
If an evacuation is required, please refer to Evacuation Procedures for guidance. If you are instructed to leave the office, please remember the following:
- In the event of an injury or life-threatening situation, call 911 or the University Police at 205-726-2020, and notify a supervisor.
- If the power goes out, please see Utility Outage information for guidance.
- Wait for guidance from emergency personnel.
- Stop using all electrical equipment.
- Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you must walk in water, walk where it is not moving and check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
- Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely.
Tornado or Hurricane
- Stay indoors, away from windows and glass doors.
- Do not use elevators.
- Close all interior doors and window blinds.
- Go to the center of a small interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest possible level of the building.
- Lie on the floor under a table or other sturdy furniture.
- Do not have a false sense of security if the weather calms. It could be the eye of the storm, and winds can pick up again.
- In the event of an injury or life-threatening situation, call 911 or the University Police at 205-726-2020, and notify a supervisor.
- Evacuate if you are directed by emergency personnel or if you feel you are in danger.
Severe Thunderstorm and Lightning
- Severe thunderstorm and lightning can occur without notice or warning and can create dangerous situations.
- Stay indoors, away from windows and glass doors.
- Avoid using electrical equipment and land line telephones.
- If possible, save your work and turn off computers.

Winter Storms and Extreme Cold
- Stay apprised with local news and reports from organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or the National Weather Service.
- Winter storm warnings are for storms occurring within 12–24 hours.
- Winter storm watch advisories are for storms occurring within 12–48 hours.
- Stay indoors.
- If you must go outside, walk carefully.
- Do not drive.
