Students explore foundational texts and ideas while gaining essential life and career skills. Inspired by leading Great Books programs and rooted in Samford’s Christian mission, the Core prepares students to navigate a complex world with confidence and purpose.
Core Texts
The Core Texts sequence introduces students to great works of literature, philosophy, history, and theology. In these courses, students engage with influential thinkers from ancient Greece through the modern era. They learn how these ideas have shaped human thought and how they remain relevant today. This intellectual journey equips students with a broader perspective and sharper analytical skills.
Core Writing
Core Writing and Speech courses help students develop clear, effective communication skills—highly valued by employers and critical for leadership in any field. Students learn to write academic papers, conduct research, and deliver engaging presentations. Coursework emphasizes adaptability, critical thinking, and multimedia fluency.
Biblical Foundations
Biblical Foundations introduces students to the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, exploring their content, historical context, literary forms, and contemporary relevance. The course fosters a deeper understanding of the Bible’s role in shaping culture, values, and Christian faith. Students learn to thoughtfully engage with Scripture and apply its teachings to modern life.
Concepts of Fitness & Health
Concepts of Fitness and Health emphasizes the components of a healthy lifestyle. The principles of fitness including cardiovascular health, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition are discussed and applied through classroom and physical activities. Other topics such as nutrition, weight management and injury management are discussed. Individuals registered with Disability Services will meet with the appropriate individuals for activity consideration.
