Physical Training (PT) is a core component of the Air Force ROTC program, designed to help cadets build endurance, strength, and overall fitness while preparing for the Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at the end of each semester. PT is held twice a week for one hour. The Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) is held at least twice per semester and evaluates cardiovascular endurance, upper body strength, and core strength. A passing score must be achieved to be eligible to be commissioned in the United States Air Force.

Fitness Standards

Cadets should strive to meet and surpass the following baseline fitness goals:

Females

  • 21 push-ups in 1 minute
  • 40 sit-ups in 1 minute
  • 5-mile run in 15:50 or faster

Males

  • 40 push-ups in 1 minute
  • 45 sit-ups in 1 minute
  • 5-mile run in 13:15 or faster

To evaluate your current fitness level, you can test yourself against these standards.

Diverse & Dynamic Training

AFROTC PT sessions are designed to be varied and engaging, incorporating:
  • Running—endurance and sprint training
  • Calisthenics—bodyweight exercises for strength and agility
  • Weightlifting—resistance training for muscle development
  • Swimming—enhancing cardiovascular endurance (select sessions)

Most PT sessions are held at the Samford Track. However, some sessions take place at alternate locations throughout the semester.
