Samford University's Department of Social Work continuing education program is designed to help social work practitioners engage in life-long learning. By staying informed of current research and trends in practice, human service professionals can apply best practices to the populations they serve. Samford University’s Department of Social Work seeks to offer continuing education opportunities that address all levels of practice.

Presenters

Christson Adedoyin, PhD, MSW

Christson Adedoyin is currently an Associate Professor of Social Work in the Department of Social Work. His research interests include: Integration of faith and learning, Faith-based interventions to address socio-economic and health disparities among African Americans/African Immigrants, Program Evaluation, Church Consulting, and Faith-based organizational change management. 

Lisa Baker, PhD, LICSW

Lisa Baker is professor and chair of Samford’s Department of Social Work. She is co-author of the book Disasters and Vulnerable Populations: Evidence-based Practice for the Helping Professions (Springer, 2015), which reviews and synthesizes current evidence on disaster preparedness and response within a variety of vulnerable populations. David Cecil, PhD, LICSW

David Cecil is an associate professor in Samford’s Department of Social Work and his private practice, Optimize Counseling and Therapy, is located in Mountain Brook, Alabama. In his practice, Cecil specializes in anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety, obsessive compulsive and panic disorders. Read more

Matt Knierim, PhD, MSW, MPA, LMSW

Matt is the Principal of Platform, LLC which exists to empower and equip nonprofit organizations interested in shaping public policy. Learn more

Rachel Hagues, PhD, MSW

Rachel Hagues is an assistant professor in Samford’s Department of Social Work. For the last several years she has worked in a remote community in Tanzania with women and girls. Her dissertation looked at gender discrimination issues in that community. As a result of that work, she is currently partnering with community members to establish a private secondary school for girls. Read more

Jean Roberson, DSW, LICSW

Jean Roberson is the director of field education and instructor in Samford’s Department of Social Work. She has spent 16 years in social work practice with the majority of her career in a faith-based context. Roberson is completing her Doctorate in Social Work at St. Catherine University/University of St. Thomas.   Read more
