Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy has once again demonstrated its excellence in the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) pharmacy residency match. This year's results, continuing the positive trend of recent years, showcased strong numbers for both students and graduates.
Out of the school's current fourth-year class and previous graduates, an impressive 57 students secured a residency. This includes 40 current students who successfully matched with a Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) pharmacy residency, placing McWhorter School of Pharmacy in the top 25% of pharmacy programs in the U.S. and a top two private school of pharmacy in the South.
While Doctor of Pharmacy graduates are not required to complete a residency before they begin practice, pharmacy residencies are designed to provide additional pharmacy practice experience in a specific area of interest.
“A residency is not required of all pharmacy graduates, but for those with certain career aspirations, it is a necessary step. I’m so pleased to see our students and graduates do well. And I am thankful for all the faculty do to prepare them as part of our post-graduate preparation program,” said Michael Crouch, dean of McWhorter School of Pharmacy. “We are incredibly proud of all of our graduates securing a position, whether it be a full-time position or residency.”
McWhorter School of Pharmacy students and graduates were matched with PGY1 and PGY2 residencies in 16 states across the country, offering a diverse range of specialties, including pediatrics, community pharmacy, ambulatory care, infectious diseases, health system administration, oncology, organ transplant and more.
