Over its 10 years of programming, McWhorter School of Pharmacy’s Healthy Dose® podcast is as much a chronicle of the changing health care landscape as it is the professional journey of its host Anthony Bolus, Pharm.D.—from inquisitive student to full-time pharmacist.
Healthy Dose® is a monthly podcast that offers expert advice for healthy living. Each episode focuses on a topic that affects our health and wellbeing, offering expert opinions from pharmacists and other health care professionals. Bolus first launched the program as a student project, broadcasting from Samford’s on-campus radio station. He’s since expanded the audience to a completely online format, accessible on all major podcast-carrying networks. Now a full-time pharmacist and clinical coordinator at Family Medical Services, he sees the podcast as a community education initiative and a potential resource for pharmacist continuing education.
“My own personal goal for the show is to make a positive difference in at least one person’s life—if that is achieved, then this was all worth it,” Bolus said.
Show topics have included everything from cholesterol medications and blood thinners to Alzheimer’s Disease and diabetes, as well as pharmacy-specific issues. Featured guests have ranged from pharmacists who work at poison control to the current president of the American Pharmacists Association. The show’s guests have also reflected the increased importance of interdisciplinary work within the health care team by incorporating professionals beyond pharmacy. In its 10th year, Bolus plans to continue focusing on issues most impacting listeners today.
“I want to be consistent so listeners understand what they will gain from listening to each episode: concise information from a reputable health care professional, discussing not just opinions but presenting evidence-based facts in a language that we can all understand,” he said. “When I am editing the show, I highlight content that can be readily applied to listeners’ lives or their loved ones in order to optimize health outcomes for all.”
In 2021, Bolus plans to cover topics that relate to COVID-19, over-the-counter medication that can help to decrease severity of the disease, and mental health awareness during a pandemic. The most recent episode features fellow McWhorter School of Pharmacy alumnus and current president of the American Pharmacists Association Michael Hogue who discusses new COVID-19 vaccines.
