Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Fund
The Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Fund provides support to faculty and students who are engaged in scholarly research in the pharmaceutical sciences. Pharmaceutical sciences research involves students as part of their education under the direct supervision of experienced faculty mentors. Samford students will have the opportunity to present their research at local, national or international meetings and to have their work published in peer-reviewed journals.
Places and Spaces
College of Health Sciences Building Fund
In fall 2016, McWhorter School of Pharmacy moved into the new College of Health Sciences, an innovative learning environment designed to foster interprofessional collaboration and cutting-edge experiential learning. The building fund provides support for ongoing enhancements and maintenance for the 223,000-square-foot College of Health Sciences.
Scholarships
McWhorter School of Pharmacy Annual Scholarships
Annual scholarships at the McWhorter School of Pharmacy are crucial to providing financial assistance to current McWhorter School of Pharmacy students with financial needs. These scholarships are intended to help alleviate financial concerns of qualifying students in order to help them maintain focus on their academic pursuits and ultimately finish their pharmacy degree at Samford.
Dr. Gary Bumgarner Legacy Scholarship
The Dr. Gary Bumgarner Legacy Scholarship was established in 2016 in memory of Dr. Bumgarner by alumni, faculty, staff and friends. The scholarship is a tribute to Dr. Bumgarner’s dedication to his students and to his commitment to be a friend, mentor, advocate or cheerleader to all those that crossed his path. Scholarships from this fund are awarded to students who demonstrate characteristics embodied by Dr. Bumgarner: service and support of others.
Under Represented Minority Student Scholarship
This fund was established in 2016 by participants in the University’s Big Give Project. Scholarships from this fund will be awarded to under-represented minority students who are enrolled at the McWhorter School of Pharmacy with preference given to those students who are from the state of Alabama, exhibit a record of service in their communities and/or Samford and who also demonstrate financial need.
Joseph O. Dean, Jr. Pharmacy Scholarship
In 2006, the Joseph O. Dean, Jr. Pharmacy Scholarship was established to honor Dean Dean’s retirement from Samford University. Dean Dean’s career at Samford spanned 25 years - including 15 as pharmacy dean. The scholarship reflects Dean's numerous contributions to the University, his profession, and his unwavering support of pharmacy students at Samford. Recipients will be McWhorter School of Pharmacy students who are in good academic standing and have a demonstrated record of service to their communities and at Samford.
Katherine (Kavi) Vance Scholarship
The Katherine (Kavi) Vance Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Katherine (Kavi) Vance – a daughter, sister, granddaughter and niece – and a 1998 graduate of the McWhorter School of Pharmacy graduate. The fund is a tribute to her vivacious personality and to the commitment she made to the pharmacy profession. The recipient of this award will be given to a second-year, full-time pharmacy student at the McWhorter School of Pharmacy who has an outgoing personality, is socially well-adjusted, friendly and who enjoys life with a seriousness of purpose.
Rural Counties of Alabama Scholarship
Established in 2010 with initial gifts from L. Edward Davis, Jr. ’85 and W. Evan McDonald ’95, the Rural Counties of Alabama Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to students from rural counties in Alabama to attend Samford to study pharmacy.
Dr. Susan P. Alverson Scholarship
To honor her role as associate dean, course instructor and mentor at the McWhorter School of Pharmacy, the Susan P. Alverson Scholarship was established by friends, colleagues and alumni in 2012. Fund generated from this endowed scholarship are awarded to students enrolled in the McWhorter School of Pharmacy who are in good academic standing and have demonstrated a record of service in their communities and at Samford.
Tea Sam Roe Pharmacy Fund
In 2007, Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy established the Tea Sam Roe Pharmacy Fund endowed scholarship in honor of Dr. Tea Sam Roe. Dr. Roe is the longest serving faculty member at Samford, having taught for 43 years and is beloved by alumni, faculty, staff and friends who interacted with him during this long career at the university. Gifts to this endowment will assist students with travel expenses associated with international clinical experiences, participation in professional organization conventions and conferences and to provide scholarship opportunities to enhance the educational experience at the McWhorter School of Pharmacy.
McWhorter School of Pharmacy Advisory Board Scholarship
The McWhorter School of Pharmacy Advisory Board Scholarship was established by the school’s advisory board members in 2016. The goal of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students enrolled at McWhorter School of Pharmacy who demonstrate leadership and exhibit a record of service in their communities or at Samford University.
Robert C. Sheaffer Scholarship for Pharmacy Students with Military Service
This scholarship was established in memory of Robert C. Sheaffer by his daughter. Scholarships will be awarded to students studying pharmacy who will be in their second, third or fourth year of study. Applicants must be current or veteran members of the U.S. armed forces who have received honorable discharge from their service.

Solid Foundation
McWhorter School of Pharmacy Dean's Fund
An unrestricted gift to the Dean's Fund can often be the most generous gift of all. Your support will be pooled with other donors' and applied to the project of greatest need. Traditionally, the Dean's Fund has been used to create scholarships, provide help to students in need and support the construction and renovation of new classrooms and learning spaces for students and faculty at the McWhorter School of Pharmacy.
Pharmacy Student Relief
The McWhorter School of Pharmacy Student Relief Fund was founded to provide financial assistance to pharmacy students in times of need or emergency. Students can apply for aid or can be nominated for aid by another student or faculty member. This fund is supported strictly by donations and fundraising efforts by the students, faculty and staff of the McWhorter School of Pharmacy.
