David Luginbuhl on Veterans Day

The Samford community gathered Friday, November 10, to commemorate National Veterans Day in a late morning ceremony on Sherman Circle, followed by a luncheon that honored U.S servicemen and women.  This is the second year of renewed celebrations organized by the university.

The program outside Samford Hall featured patriotic songs, recognition of the various armed service branches, and a special address from Dr. David Luginbuhl.  The Director of Computer Science and Associate Professor in the Howard College of Arts and Sciences served in the United States Air Force.  Dr. Luginbuhl’s speech focused on how faith, service and learning all intersect.

“Our faith should drive us to serve. Our example is Christ Himself, who said that He did not come to be served but to serve others,” said Dr. Luginbuhl.   

Following the event, veterans at Samford were invited to a celebration luncheon in their honor, during which President Beck A. Taylor continued a university tradition – passing out Samford Military Challenge Coins. The specially commissioned coins were developed to honor members of the Samford community who serve or have served in the U.S. Military.

“We have a long history of service in our United States armed forces at Samford,” said President Taylor.  “So, it’s important for us to take a moment to wrap our arms around those in our community who are serving and who have served our nation so valiantly.  We at Samford recognize the way that they are protecting our freedoms that we enjoy.”
