In 2020, Samford University established the Step Sing Endowed Scholarship to celebrate one of the university’s most beloved traditions where student groups practice tirelessly to sing and dance in front of their peers, family, alumni and community members.
The recipients of this scholarship are announced on the stage yearly following the Saturday evening performance.
Kate Gunn, who received the scholarship in 2022, shared how the scholarship enhanced her Step Sing experience. “I think it’s really cool that Samford has a scholarship unrelated to academics to support their student life and the fun tradition that is Step Sing,” Gunn said. “There’s so much planning months before the show, and I think the scholarship is a fun way to reward that.”
All Step Sing participants with at least one undergraduate semester remaining are eligible to receive funds from the scholarship, and the award can make or break some students’ ability to fully fund their education.
“If I didn’t have scholarship money, I wouldn’t be here,” said Nicole Gibson, a first-generation college student. “It definitely lessens the burden. Those scholarships add up, and you start to notice the difference. I think it’s nice that the opportunity is there for more people because you don’t know everyone’s story.”
