Samford University’s Global Engagement Office will celebrate International Education Week during the week of Nov. 14 through Nov. 18. The office will host a variety of events in partnership with several student organizations and campus groups.
International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. It is a world-wide exchange designed to celebrate the benefits of international education and promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences.
“IEW is an opportunity for us to highlight the international education taking part all across campus, not just in the Global Engagement Office,” said Director of Global Engagement, Lauren Doss.
Doss believes that recent historical events have only strengthened the need to recognize the significance of a global education and society.
“We live in a global society -- our recent experience with a pandemic helps us realize truly how small this world is. It’s important for every citizen – including every Samford student -- to have cultural awareness and sensitivity to global issues. We are a part of a society much larger than our city, state, and country; and therefore we must learn how to engage with people who think, act, speak different than ourselves. In order to build an appreciation for diverse cultures and convictions, we must engage with that diversity through education and experience,” said Doss.
International Education Week will give students, faculty and staff the important opportunity to build cultural awareness and engage with diversity through education and experience. The Global Engagement Office has partnered with several groups and organizations on campus to provide interactive activities and events throughout the week.
“Each event is exciting, especially those events that are student-driven and facilitated. I’m so grateful for all the work of the International Ambassadors, International Students, cultural student clubs, and departments across campus that contribute to our schedule of events. I’m looking forward to attending cricket on the quad, the lecture on HM Queen Elizabeth II’s life and legacy, and the Latino Student Experience Panel,” said Doss.
With so many opportunities for the Samford community to partake in, Doss and the Global Engagement Office hope the cultural diversity of Samford is fully represented.
“I hope that the Samford community will see how many diverse cultures are represented by our students, faculty and staff at Samford. I also hope that the community will engage in an activity that may be new to them or encounter a new idea or perspective,” said Doss.
