Samford University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) held the inaugural sports media lecture Nov. 2 with speaker Rachel Baribeau. 

During the lecture, “My Life as a Multimedia Sports Journalist,” Baribeau spoke about her wide variety of experience in the sports media world and encouraged students to work hard for what they are passionate about. 

Baribeau is the first and only female host for Sirius XM Radio’s College Sports Nation and has experience working with Fox Sports, ESPN, CBS Sports and Yahoo. She is also a passionate ALS advocate, even climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for the Kevin Turner Foundation. Her experience working in the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference as a sports editor, sideline reporter and radio analyst has earned her the moniker as the South’s “sweetheart of sports.” 

“Rachel was an exceptional choice. She is a wonderful multimedia journalist who was great to talk to students about faith and career opportunities when you work hard,” said JMC department chair Bernie Ankney. “The sport media minor makes Samford JMC different and gives students marketable skills.” 

More than 150 students and faculty attended the lecture. There was also a question and answer event for students interested in a sports journalism career and a reception before Baribeau’s lecture. Baribeau spent time connecting with students and offering mentor opportunities. 

During the lecture, Baribeau encouraged her audience with some advice. 

“Each of you were put on earth for something larger than your career. You are here to have an impact, and that might not be your career, but your career might be your vehicle.”
