The Birmingham community is filled with music, theatre, dance, art and design events, and Joseph Hopkins, dean of Samford University’s School of the Arts, wants members of the community to take full advantage of the opportunities. 

“A Patron’s Guide to Birmingham Arts” is open to any member of the Birmingham community and will be taught by Hopkins this fall. The class will meet for two free preview sessions in September and then continue through December. 

Cost is $75 for the semester.

The class will focus on upcoming events around Birmingham and study subjects related to these performances, exhibits and festivals, Hopkins said. Special guests will provide an inside perspective on the arts and how to make the most of the rich culture in this area. 

The two free preview sessions are Sept. 15 and 22 from 10-11:30 a.m. Regular classes will be held on Mondays from 10-11:30 a.m. starting Oct. 6 and ending Dec. 1. Classes will be held at the Samford University Academy of the Arts, 1939 S. Lakeshore Drive. 

“We hope the class will offer insight that makes these experiences more enjoyable and valuable,” said Hopkins. “And that the students will learn about the history, context and form of ballet, symphony, jazz, theatre, band, painting, sculpture, design and all of the arts.”
