Former Samford University vice president for financial affairs H. Evan Zeiger, Sr., died Aug. 30, 2009. He was 88.
Zeiger joined Samford as business manager in 1956. Soon afterward, he was involved in the huge task of moving equipment and university property from the school’s East Lake location to its new site in Homewood.
He served as vice president for financial affairs during 1968-83, and was athletic director from 1969 until his retirement in 1984. Following retirement from Samford, he was general manager of Jetco, Inc, a charter and fixed-base operation at Birmingham airport. A licensed pilot, he taught ground school courses in the Samford After Sundown program for many years.
Zeiger was long involved in Alabama Baptist denominational affairs. A native of Gadsden, he was a graduate of Auburn University.
He is survived by his wife, Gene, five children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Usrey Funeral Home in Pell City on Friday, Sept. 4, 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
The funeral service will be at First Baptist Church in Pell City on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m., with interment at Langdale Cemetery in Langdale, Ala., at 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
