Samford University's Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies will host its 2006 Samford Summer Institute for Teaching Excellence (SSITE) July 16-19.

Teachers, counselors and administrators in k-12 schools are invited to participate and hear from specialists in a variety of topics. Registration deadline is July 5.

Educational consultant Kathleen Hess, professional development coordinator at National Hispanic University, San Jose, Calif., will present the opening program on Sunday, July 16. Her topic will be activities that optimize learning and make the mind-body-memory connection.

Monday's speakers are Walk the Talk company consultant and author Paul Sims, speaking on ethics and integrity; and learning and human development specialist Thomas Armstrong, who will discuss building on students' assets for success in school and life.

Tuesday's lineup includes educational leadership and policy studies specialist Lillian Dean Webb, who will discuss religion and the schools; and classroom management specialist Todd Parker, speaking on how to ensure a positive impact on students.

Wednesday's speakers and topics are intervention strategy specialist Stephen Peters, saving America's children; and brain hemispheric function researcher Renee Cobb, the influence of brain dominance in learning, leading and living.

The $200 registration fee includes workshop materials, one dinner, two lunches, three breakfasts and refreshments. Lodging arrangements should be made individually. Each participant who attends the entire conference will receive 24 hours of professional development credit or 2.4 continuing education credits.

All SSITE sessions will be held at Cahaba Grand Conference Center (formerly HealthSouth Conference Center).
