Samford Exercise Science Department To Screen Additional Perry County Students

The Samford University exercise science and sports medicine department will continue its program of health and fitness screening in Perry County later this year after conducting a successful health fair for Marion high school students May 6.

Three faculty members and 21 students from the department helped more than 100 students at Francis Marion High School with assessments of their blood pressure, heart rate, strength, body fat and other health measures.

Fifteen high school students who showed signs of hypertension were referred to their school nurse and a weekly hypertension clinic in Marion run by Samford's McWhorter School of Pharmacy.

"We received a very positive response from students, teachers, nurses and administrators," said Dr. Charles D. Sands, IV, exercise science and sports medicine department chair. "They wanted us to come back and screen other students at Francis Marion High and students at another school as well."

Dr. Sands said the screening programs would be scheduled later in the summer and fall.

In addition to the screening, Dr. Jim Angel of the Samford exercise science and sports medicine faculty provided nutrition education in-service training for the high school cafeteria staff.

The health fair was held in conjunction with the Sowing Seeds of Hope program and was part of a year-long effort by Samford to work with Perry County residents on health programs.
