Samford University students will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Step Sing activity with Community/Alumni Night at the opening performance on Thursday, Feb. 17. Step Sing, the school's most popular annual tradition will be held Feb. 17-19 at 7 p.m. in Wright Center Concert Hall.
A percentage of total ticket sales from the three-night event will support Samford's Habitat for Humanity house, which will be constructed later this spring. Each of the 17 competing groups will bring items such as towels and canned goods to the Thursday performance. The items will be given to Jessie's Place, a local shelter for women and children.
According to Step Sing student chair Mary Michael Garver, the community emphasis is a way for student participants "to say thank you to the city that continues to nurture and support them."
The groups will compete for honors based on choreography, costumes, music and theme. During six-minute shows, each group of about 50 students combines singing and choreography in Broadway-type presentations.
Step Sing began as groups lining up to sing on the steps of the women's dorm when the school was located on the East Lake campus.
Tickets are $8 and $12 for Thursday night, and $10 and $14 for Friday and Saturday. The public may purchase tickets through TicketMaster at 715-6000.
