Samford University has received a "Building Birmingham Award" from the Birmingham Area Chamber of Commerce.

Samford was cited for Excellence in Campus Development in the 1999 awards program which recognizes developers, institutions, local governments and other organizations who make a "special contribution to the Birmingham metropolitan's built environment."

The university was singled out for its pursuit of a consistent architectural style and a larger plan, all within a dramatic setting to produce a campus of notable character. "Maturing shade trees enhance the effect, and recent landscape improvements have created appealing places for students to gather," states the award citation.

Samford's striking 200-acre campus of Georgian-Colonial architecture is frequently recognized by state and national professional groups for its architecture, landscape, and interior design.

Also recognized by the Birmingham Chamber with Building Birmingham Awards were St. Vincent's Hospital, the Clark Building downtown and the town of Springville.
