In the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, we hold fast to a code of values and an overarching philosophy of faith in our words and actions, excellence in our student outcomes, integrity, life-long learning, teamwork and service, which is at the core of all that we do. We feel strongly that if we maintain these standards, our students will provide an excellent level of care for all of those they touch.
The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) has awarded Samford University’s National Student Speech Language Hearing Association chapter (SUNSSLHA) with gold chapter honors for the 2019-2020 academic year.
In 2018, the School of Health Professions surprised Margaret Johnson, professor and chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, with the endowment of the Margaret L. Johnson Scholarship. This year, Mary Beth Wagner was selected as the 2019-20 recipient.
Mary Beth is a 2019 B.S. in communication sciences and disorders graduate and a second-year M.S. in speech language pathology student.
Annually, Samford University National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (SUNSSLHA) members work together to organize and complete service projects for the community. This year, the student organization partnered with The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs to update the Center’s literacy bags.

Health Professions Students Serve in Ecuador
Katee Nall, a second-year speech language pathology student, was one of 18 School of Health Professions students who traveled to Ecuador for a speech language pathology and physical therapy interprofessional medical mission trip.
Learning to Care for the Whole Person
Interprofessional teams of students in the School of Health Professions learned to care for the whole person as they worked side by side to evaluate and treat survivors of a traumatic brain injury at the annual Bright Ideas TBI Camp with the Alabama Head Injury Foundation.
