Tom Crosby has been part of the Samford University community since 2018, joining midway through the renovation of the Daniel House in London. As Director of UK Programmes and Operations, Tom oversees business operations, academic and programme development, risk management, and student services, all with the goal of enhancing student well-being and maximising their immersive experience in the UK. He also teaches courses on British history and culture, loving nothing more than taking students to the Imperial War Museum or retracing the footsteps of George Orwell across London.
Originally from Coventry (most famous for being bombed during the Blitz), Tom ventured to the American South to study History and play soccer at Young Harris College, GA. Following his undergraduate studies, he lived and worked in Athens, GA, for a year before pursuing his MA in History at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. His academic interests focus on Britain’s relative decline, Anglo-American relations, the evolution of Britishness, and landscapes of memorialization.
After seven years of living and studying abroad, Tom drew on his international experiences to transition into the field of American higher education in London. He worked in various capacities for Arcadia and Boston University in London before joining Samford at the Daniel House, where he aims to create a home away from home for Samford students, faculty, and staff. Tom is passionate about fostering a deep, nuanced understanding of Britain’s culture and past – one that goes beyond textbooks or tourist experiences. He encourages students to immerse themselves in London’s global landscape, gaining cultural capital that will stay with them long after they leave. His goal is for students to gain not only an appreciation for British life but also a broader perspective on their own country and personal identity.
Tom lives on-site at the Daniel House with his wife, Beth, their four-legged son, Larry, and their human son, George.
