Joanna Burkhart has undertaken various roles since joining the Daniel House team in 2015.  As Associate Director of UK Programmes and Operations, Joanna is now in charge of our London internship programme, manages our UK adjunct faculty, and oversees immigration compliance.  Joanna also supports our Samford faculty in residence as they develop their courses to ensure the most effective use of London as a ‘city classroom’.

Joanna graduated in Geography from Oxford University, BA (Hons), MA (Oxon), and has an MA (awarded distinction) in Global Cultures from Kings College, London.  While at Oxford, Joanna spent time in Berlin, Germany, undertaking research into the lives of Turkish women.  She maintains a keen interest in the ways in which migration shapes identities, interactions, and cultures.

Having worked in London for 20 years, Joanna remains fascinated by the diversity, creativity and vibrancy of the city.  At the Daniel House, Jo seeks to cultivate a safe and supportive space, allowing students to venture outside their comfort zone and return home with a greater sense of independence and appreciation for different cultures.  She believes that it is in developing greater sensitivity to those around us that we build compassion and understanding, lay the foundation for co-operation, and create potential for positive change in the world.

Prior to joining Samford, Jo worked in qualitative market research and for her church.  Her husband, Jon, is a Samford graduate. They live in west London with their children.
