Samford University is pleased to announce the addition of Jhamal Mathis as the new coordinator for multicultural student support in the Office of Student Success and Diversity (OSSD). Mathis, a Birmingham native with a strong background in student development and leadership, brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments.
"This role provides me with an opportunity to support and help students grow spiritually, academically, and emotionally throughout their tenure at the university," Mathis said. "Being able to see students that I have walked alongside graduate and become who they’re meant to be is such a joy to me!"
In his new role, Mathis is eager to contribute to the holistic development of students at Samford. One of his key responsibilities will be working with the university's IMPACT mentors and mentees. He is particularly excited about leading them through an upcoming cadre focused on purpose and identity.
As a Christ-centered university, Samford is dedicated to creating safe and diverse learning environments for its students, faculty, staff and alumni. Mathis plans to do just that, citing the need for unity across campus and in our communities.
"We are in need of unity, not uniformity," Mathis explained. "Without unity, we cannot move forward, but without space to share and understand differences, we cannot achieve unity."
As a Birmingham native, Mathis' journey to Samford is a homecoming of sorts. He attended the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School in Irondale before earning both his bachelor's degree in human resource management and his master's in public administration from the University of Alabama.
Mathis' professional experience, including his work in the MPA degree program's office and the UA Center for Community-Based Partnerships, has equipped him with the skills necessary to lead and support students in their development.
Mathis attributes his arrival at Samford to divine providence, having transitioned from a career in campus ministry. Initially applying for a different position, he was ultimately drawn to the vision of the OSSD.
"Upon hearing the vision of the OSSD, I was sold and excited to become a part of this great team," he said, "I have a significant understanding of the ground-level student-facing work as well as a wealth of experience in spiritual formation that I believe helps strengthen the amazing work of our office.”
As a final piece of advice to Samford students and the community, Mathis encourages focusing on taking the next right step. Inspired by Samford University’s strategic plan and diversity action plan, OSSD plans to continue to nurture persons in their development of intellect, creativity, faith and personhood.
"Our institutional goals and academic dreams of development can sometimes become overwhelming," he advised, "but if we make the next right steps, we will arrive to all that God has in store for us in due time."
