Samford University will observe Disability Awareness Month during the month of October. Although the Disability Awareness Month is typically observed in March, Samford’s Office of Student Success and Diversity (OSSD) is partnering with the Office of Accessibility and Accommodations to combine this acknowledge with Disability Employment Awareness Month customarily acknowledged in October.
“When the nation’s celebration takes place in March, there is a national emphasis on equitable employment and creating opportunities for each member of our community. We strive to do this, not in spite of our differences, but in celebration of the beauty and diversity of the Samford community,” said De’Janae Tookes, assistant director of multicultural initiatives and events.
A series of events and learning opportunities are planned for the entire Samford community.
“Awareness events and seminars will highlight what accommodations are available for students and best practices for implementation. We are excited to facilitate events that raise awareness and further community education,” Tookes said.
The campus will feature informational signs about events and features, and the OSSD’s social channel, @samforddiverse, will raise disability awareness and celebrate the diversity of our community.
