Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m.-12 p.m.; 1 p.m.-4 p.m. | Virtual Appointments Only: 7 p.m.-8 p.m.
The Writing Center, located on the second floor of Brooks Hall, Room 222, is a free tutoring service for all Samford students. We help students with writing, speaking and critical reading.
To make an appointment, visit samford.mywconline.com. (For your first time, you will need to create an account--it's easy and free!) Sessions are scheduled for 30 minutes, and you can sign up for multiple appointments for writing assignments for all of your classes.
Our role is to help you become a better writer and editor. Talk with us about your paper, ask questions and point out your major concerns. We can help you with global tasks, such as development or organization, and we can help you with more specific tasks, such as APA, Chicago, or MLA style and punctuation questions.
Services for Students
We offer free tutoring for all Samford students for oral and written assignments. We also assist students with critical reading assignments. Students do not need to schedule an appointment; we work on a drop-in schedule. Just stop by the center (Brooks 222) to talk with a tutor about writing, speaking or reading.
What We Do
Sessions are approximately 30 minutes, and we pack a lot of assistance in those minutes.
You receive one-on-one time with a tutor who wants to help you learn to write and speak more effectively as well as read more critically.
We help with any stage of the writing and speaking process—from invention/brainstorming to organizing to revising. We’re great at helping you develop thesis statements and topic sentences!
If you struggle with introductions or conclusions, we can help.
Need assistance with grammar questions or formatting and documentation for APA, MLA, or Chicago? We can help.
Uncomfortable speaking in front of your classmates? Try that speech out on us first! We’ll give you pointers and help you redirect your speaking anxiety toward performance.
Not sure what that CP text means? Come in and talk it over with us. We’re here to help.
Services for Faculty
The Writing Center strives to serve faculty as well as students, and to that end, we encourage faculty to visit the center, mingle with the tutors, and learn how peer tutoring works.
While you're here, visit our faculty resource shelf to learn more about teaching and assessing writing and speaking. Our newest addition is Scott Warnock’s Teaching Writing Online: How & Why, a National Council of Teachers of English publication (2009). This is a very useful resource for any faculty member who currently teaches writing online or who is considering teaching online.
Do you have a favorite assignment or assessment tool that you would like to share? Contact the center’s director, Dr. Timothy Sutton.
