Providing enriching opportunities for students stems from the root of Samford University’s mission. This summer, Brock School of Business students and faculty travelled to Rwanda, where they partnered with Bridge2Rwanda to teach leadership and problem-solving courses to promising leaders.

Bridge2Rwanda is dedicated to transforming the East African nation into a hub for innovation. Through their ISOMO Academy, students are provided with intensive leadership and entrepreneurial training meant to equip them to make significant contributions to their communities and the global marketplace.

As part of the immersive experience, Samford students taught Rwandan students how to prepare for and acclimate to college life at Western universities. One of those students was Sloane Womac, a senior Brock Scholar. She said, “Traveling to Rwanda was an unforgettable experience that has thoroughly enriched my learning and professional development. This trip allowed me to experience new cultures, step outside of my comfort zone, and build connections worldwide. I am so grateful for the Brock Scholars program and Brock School of Business for providing such an incredible international experience I will cherish forever.”

Inspired by her own experiences and research, assistant professor Kate McCombs led the excursion. She aimed to foster understanding of servant leadership and empowerment and instill a sense of global citizenship and responsibility among the Samford students. In Rwanda, McCombs conducted research on behalf of ISOMO Academy, exploring areas such as self-leadership, well-being, anxiety and resilience to help them understand the impact of their programs.

McCombs’s passion for international work is deeply rooted in her own life experiences and personal values. Having grown up in Budapest, Hungary, and New Delhi, India, she was immersed in diverse cultures from a young age, which instilled in her a profound appreciation for global perspectives.

“This upbringing sparked my enduring passion for education and travel, driving me to explore how knowledge can be both a bridge and a catalyst for connection among different people,” she said.

McCombs envisions expanding this trip each summer, growing the partnership with Bridge2Rwanda and ISOMO Academy.

“I am committed to servant leadership, believing that the true measure of leadership lies in how well one serves others, particularly in empowering communities through education,” she said. “This approach is guided by a commitment to understanding and valuing diverse viewpoints, fostering a collaborative environment where learning is mutual and transformative.”
