Three professors in Samford University’s Brock School of Business have recently earned faculty promotions.
Art Carden was promoted to professor of economics. He is a senior fellow with the American Institute for Economic Research; a research fellow with the Independent Institute; a senior fellow with the Beacon Center of Tennessee; a senior research fellow with the Institute for Faith, Work, and Economics; and co-editor of the Southern Economic Journal. His research on mass-market retailers, economic history, and the history of economic ideas has appeared in journals like the Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Urban Economics, Public Choice, and Contemporary Economic Policy. He is a contributor to Forbes.com, and his commentaries and other articles have appeared in USA Today, Productive!, Black Belt, and many other outlets.
Carden said, “I plan to continue the work I have done up to this point, and I'm especially keen to revisit a lot of the work I've let lie dormant for far too long. I think there are a lot of areas for fruitful collaboration between economists and our colleagues in the humanities and social sciences, and I hope to push this work forward to the best of my ability.”
Clif Eason was tenured and promoted to associate professor of marketing. Eason’s expertise is in marketing analytics and strategy, customer experience and sales. He serves as the director of the professional sales concentration and mentors the national sales competition team. Prior to earning his Ph.D., he worked for 15 years in banking and financial services in Birmingham and in Nashville.
“It’s an exciting time at Brock School of business, and I’m privileged to be a part of it,” Eason said. “Our sales program has achieved great momentum, and we have big plans for it – from additional technological resources to exciting competition opportunities for our students. And, as a fellow at the Center for Sports Analytics, I’m presently involved in some projects that I expect to have significant implications for sports businesses.”
Michelle Newberry was promoted to assistant professor of accounting. Newberry teaches Principles of Accounting and is the faculty adviser for the accounting honor society, Beta Alpha Psi. Prior to joining Samford as an adjunct professor in 2014, she worked as a senior financial analyst for Southern Progress Corporation (Time Inc.) and as a senior auditor for Ernst & Young.
She said, “Samford University is a wonderful place to teach excellent students and work alongside exceptional colleagues. To receive the honor of this promotion to assistant professor is truly icing on the cake. I am thankful that Samford is a learning environment that invests in both its students and faculty.”
Congratulations to these professors.
