A Christmas Carol

Samford University School of the Arts will celebrate the holidays with the production of A Christmas Carol, the musical in the Wright Center, Dec. 2-5.  The production is part of the Michael J. and Mary Anne Freeman Theatre and Dance Series and sponsored by Elouise Williams.

Close to 50 students are cast in the show with an equal number working behind the scenes in lighting, set design, costumes and production management. Additionally, the Samford Orchestra will accompany the production.  “It is a team effort to pull off a production of this size,”  said Chelsea Nicholson, director of the show and Samford’s musical theatre area.  

“A Christmas Carol is one of the most beautiful redemption stories that mirrors the Gospel and grace available to all; even the most selfish curmudgeon of us can find hope in repentance and forgiveness,” said Nicholson.

This production is the Broadway musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ 1843 festive classic, featuring songs by renowned composer Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Newsies, Enchanted, etc.) It tells the tale of the Ebenezer Scrooge whose miserable nature comes to a crescendo during the Christmas period—”Bah! Humbug!” However, this Christmas, he is forced to come face to face with his selfish ways when he is confronted by three ghosts on Christmas Eve: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Future. In the course of one night, Scrooge is forced to recognize his faults and gains the chance to make amends.

“The musical version of A Christmas Carol is appropriate for the entire family.  We are excited to offer this show to the Birmingham community.  The Samford campus shines during the holidays with beautiful decorations, and we hope to get everyone in the Christmas spirit with this show!” said  Nicholson.
