Samford School of the Arts continues to celebrate the work of its students despite being away from campus due to COVID-19. The John and Marsha Floyd Art and Design Series Annual Student Juried Exhibition was planned to open in the Art Gallery on April 6. Fortunately, the show will go on virtually. Guest juror and artist Sarah West judged the more than 80 student entries and selected 22 works that are currently displayed on the School of the Arts website. Entries included work from graphic design, studio art and interior architecture majors. The show features a variety of mediums, from motion graphics to sculpture.
“We are so excited that we can showcase our students’ work. This show really demonstrates the range of talent from our students,” said. Lauren Evans, Art Gallery coordinator and assistant professor. “There is so much good work here that it is really hard to choose.”
Being a guest juror is part judge and curator. "When a guest juror curates a show like this, it isn’t necessarily just picking all the ‘best’ work," Evans said. "The ultimate task is to curate a cohesive exhibition, selecting works that complement one another to create something greater than the sum of the parts.”
West will be on campus this fall with a solo exhibition of her new paintings. The School of the Arts full 20-21 gallery schedule will be available soon.
Thanks to John and Marsha Floyd for their generous support this year, and to Michael J. and Mary Anne Freeman for sponsoring the reception and awards event annually. Winners will be announced on School of the Arts social media channels later this month.
