On Saturday, April 16 more than 200 alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing gathered for “Moffett on the Move,” a day of family fun to commemorate the school’s final months in the Dwight and Lucille Beeson Center for Healing Arts.

“We have called the Center for Healing Arts home since 1988, and it holds a special place in the hearts of our faculty, staff and alumni,” said Jane Martin, senior associate dean for operations in the nursing school and one of the event organizers. “It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to celebrate the rich history of our school,” she added.

Guests enjoyed a variety of activities, including a photo booth, face painting, a family fun zone, and historical exhibits. Attendees also had the opportunity to record their favorite memories in a scrapbook that will be on display in the nursing school’s new facilities.

Laurelle Stoudenmire, president of the class of 1961, attended the event with her husband, Allen, Howard College of Arts and Sciences, class of 1960. April 16 marked the day of their 55th wedding anniversary. “When I received notice of the event, I told my husband that attending was what I wanted to do to celebrate,” said Stoudenmire. Stoudenmire recalled that she was one of the few that Mrs. Moffett “allowed” to marry while in nursing school. “Mrs. Moffett only allowed senior students the privilege to get married, so we did,” she said.

Stoudenmire also took home one of the door prizes for the day, along with Rhonda Brazil, administrative assistant to the graduate faculty, and nursing student Hannah Elizabeth Wilbanks.

“Moffett on the Move was a wonderful day of reflecting on the past and looking forward to the future,” said Nena F. Sanders, nursing school dean and vice provost of Samford’s College of Health Sciences. “The Center for Healing Arts is an important part of the history of the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, and we will build on that history as we move into our new facilities.”

In addition to Martin, the planning committee for Moffett on the Move included Margie Findlay, Gretchen McDaniel, Gena Sullivan and Janis La Velle. Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing will move to the new College of Health Sciences on the east side of campus in late summer.
