Samford University’s debate team kicked off its 2024-25 season in Washington, D.C. at the George Mason Debate Tournament. The team of senior Aaron Gill and sophomore Laurel Pack advanced to the Elite Eight, with Gill earning fifth place speaker in the tournament and Pack placing 12th.

The varsity team of seniors Grace Scott and Mary Grace Hammond finished 12th overall, while the novice team of first-year Kate Alexander and junior Sarah Setzler placed in the top 20 in the novice division, marking a successful debut.

Reflecting on her first tournament experience, Setzler expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity to compete.

“Spending this weekend with Samford's debate team was the best,” said Setzler. “I’m grateful to Samford for the opportunity to travel, learn and grow this weekend. I’m looking forward to many more tournaments.”

Alexander also shared her thoughts on joining the team and competing for the first time.

“I learned a lot about how to debate and was challenged to keep moving forward despite uncertainty,” said Alexander. “It’s great to be part of a motivated team that also enjoys spending time together.”

Lee Quinn, director of debate, highlighted the significance of the season opener and the program’s long-standing tradition.

“This season opener marked the 187th year of the Samford debate program,” said Quinn. “It’s a testament to our tradition of competing at the highest levels and bringing national prestige to our school. Our success this weekend is a result of the Samford debate family, including incredible alumni who continue to support our program.”

The team will travel to the University of Kentucky on Sept. 27 for its next tournament, aiming to continue its seven-year streak of qualifying for the National Debate Tournament, which will be hosted by Gonzaga University in April 2025.
