Senior Biology major Ashley Spann was recently selected as a recipient of the 2010 United Negro College Fund-Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship. The prestigious award includes a $25,000 scholarship, two UNCF/Merck summer internships and a mentorship by a Merck scientist. Ashley credits biology professor Dr. Betsy Dobbins for encouraging her to apply for the scholarship, and all of her professors for preparing her to win the award.
"Samford and my many thoughtful and considerate professors have prepared me well for the future I intend to pursue," Ashley said. "With this award, my dreams and aspirations are even closer within my reach."
After graduation, Ashley plans to pursue an MD/PhD degree and become a physician scientist.
