Originally from the Maryland-Washington, D.C. area, William “Bill” Singleton joins the Department of Communication and Media in August 2023. Singleton received his PhD and MA degrees in communication and information sciences from the University of Alabama and his BA degree in mass media arts from Hampton University. Singleton has more than 25 years of experience reporting, writing and editing for newspapers and magazines, including the Birmingham News, the Birmingham Post-Herald, the Detroit Free Press, the Washington Post, the Birmingham TimesBirmingham WeeklyChristianity TodayHome Life  and the Over the Mountain Journal. Singleton served as an internal communications specialist with Mercedes Benz U.S. International before pursuing his advanced degrees. Singleton’s research interests include the challenges journalists of color face in a changing field and the representation of people of color in a changing news media. Singleton is a founding member of Hoover-AHEAD, a group of Hoover residents committed to promoting racial and ethnic equity and inclusion. Singleton is married to Nichole-Brooks Singleton and has two sons, Will and Cameron. Singleton and his family are members of Hunter Street Baptist Church, where he is a co-teacher of his adult small group class.
